Super Eagles Remain Africa's Sixth-Ranked Team Despite Two Spot Drop in Latest FIFA World Ranking

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped two spots to 42nd in the latest FIFA World rankings, but they remain the sixth-ranked team in Africa. The drop in ranking comes after the Super Eagles failed to win any of their two 2026 World Cup qualifying matches in November, drawing against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Despite the drop in ranking, the Super Eagles are still ahead of some of Africa's top teams, including Ghana, South Africa, and Ivory Coast. However, they are still behind Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt.

The Super Eagles will be looking to improve their ranking in the next few months, starting with the Africa Cup of Nations commencing in January before their next World Cup qualifier against Benin in March.

What does this mean for the Super Eagles?

The drop in ranking is a setback for the Super Eagles, but it is not a major cause for concern. The team is still in a good position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and they have a number of talented players who can help them to improve their ranking.

Where do you think Nigeria will rank by the end of 2024?

It is difficult to say for sure where Nigeria will rank by the end of 2024, but I believe that they have the potential to be one of the top five teams in Africa. The team has a lot of young talent, and they are playing an attractive style of football. If they can continue to improve, they could be a force to be reckoned with in African football.

Here are some factors that could affect Nigeria's ranking in the next few years:

  • Their performance in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations
  • The results of their remaining World Cup qualifiers
  • The development of their young players

I am optimistic that Nigeria can improve their ranking in the next few years and become one of the top teams in Africa.

Super Falcons Soar to Victory, Thrashing Cape Verde 5-0 in WAFCON Qualifiers

In a display of sheer dominance, Nigeria's Super Falcons took control of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, thrashing Cape Verde 5-0 in a resounding victory at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja. The Falcons, nine-time African champions, showcased their prowess and determination, leaving Cape Verde reeling from their offensive onslaught.

From the opening whistle, the Falcons asserted their authority, dictating the tempo of the game and pressing forward with unwavering determination. Their efforts were rewarded in the seventh minute when Uchenna Kanu netted the curtain-raiser, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The goal served as a catalyst for the Falcons, who continued to bombard the Cape Verde defense with relentless attacks.

Just before the half-hour mark, Tenerife forward Gift Monday doubled Nigeria's lead, capitalizing on a goalmouth scramble to send the ball into the back of the net. The Falcons were not satisfied with a two-goal advantage and continued to push forward, their attacking prowess proving too much for Cape Verde to handle.

Kanu, determined to leave her mark on the match, added her second goal of the game late in the first half, converting a Toni Payne cross with a clinical finish. The Falcons' dominance was undeniable, and they went into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half saw no change in the Falcons' relentless pursuit of goals. Esther Okoronkwo, who came on as a substitute, made her presence felt in the 66th minute, scoring a sublime goal off Esther Akudo Ogbonna's cross. Eleven minutes later, Okoronkwo secured her second goal of the game, putting the finishing touches on a truly dominant performance.

The 5-0 thrashing marked the Falcons' biggest win in a competitive fixture since their 6-0 triumph against Equatorial Guinea in the 2018 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations. The victory not only puts them in a strong position to advance to the WAFCON finals but also serves as a resounding reminder of their status as a force to be reckoned with in African women's football.

Can United Rescue Their European Campaign with a Bayern Munich Upset?

Pxfuel
Manchester United's Champions League campaign is on the brink of collapse after a disappointing draw with Copenhagen. The Red Devils now need to win their final group game against Bayern Munich and hope that there is no winner in the other match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

It's a tough ask, but United have a history of pulling off the unexpected. In 1999, they famously beat Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League. The Red Devils came from a goal down to score two last-gasp goals by Sheringham (90'+1) and Solskjær (90+3). Since then, United have played 8 games against Bayern Munich (W1, D3, L4). Again, in 2019, they came from 1-0 down to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the same competition 3-1 in a round of 16 match.

So, is it possible that United can do it again?

United's Chances

There are a few reasons why United should believe they can beat Bayern Munich.

First, United may take advantage of the home supporters to cheer then up for a win. They have won just one match in the competition so far and they did it at home against Copenhagen.

Second, Bayern Munich have already secured top spot in the group, so they may not be at their strongest. Manager Julian Nagelsmann may rest some of his key players, giving United a chance to exploit.

Third, United have a good attacking record in the Champions League. They have scored 12 goals in their five group matches so far.

Of course, there are also some reasons why United should be worried.

First, Bayern Munich are a very good team. They are the current champions of the Bundesliga and have a lot of experience in the Champions League and have not lost any match this season.

Second, United's defense has been poor this season. They have conceded over 30 goals in their in all competitions and have conceived 14 times in the in the Champions League this season.

Third, United have a poor record against Bayern Munich. They have lost four times in the last eight matches against the German club winning only once.

Listed below are the possible outcomes for United's final match:

  • United win and Copenhagen lose: United will qualify for the knockout stages.
  • United win and Copenhagen draw: United will qualify for knockout stages.
  • United win and Copenhagen win: United will finish third in the group and drop into the Europa League.
  • United draw and Copenhagen lose: United will finish third in the group and drop into the Europa League.
  • United draw and Copenhagen draw: United will finish fourth in the group and be eliminated from the Champions League.
  • United lose and Copenhagen win or draw: United will still finish fourth in the group and be eliminated from the Champions League.
As you can see, United's chances of progressing to the knockout stages are very slim. They will need to pull off a miracle to qualify. However, they have a history of doing that in the Champions League, so they should not be counted out just yet.

Conclusion

So, can United rescue their European campaign with a Bayern Munich upset? It's possible, but it will be tough. United will need to be at their best to beat Bayern Munich.

Here are some of the key factors that will determine the outcome of the match:

  • Which Bayern Munich team turns up?
  • Can United's defense keep Bayern Munich out?
  • Can United's attack create enough chances to score?

If United can answer all of these questions in the affirmative, then they have a chance of winning. But if they don't, then their European campaign will be over.

Only time will tell if United can pull off the miracle. But one thing is for sure: it will be an exciting match to watch.

I compliment the team and in the same moment I criticise them, and myself as we are not defending good enough. We were leading 3-1 and you can't afford such mistakes."

"I am pleased at how dynamic and brave the team was. We created so many chances, especially at the end. Big chances. We played good football.

"I blame myself if we go out. Know that we are in a project and we are improving. We are in the right direction. I know where we have to go, what steps to take and I’m sure we will be successful in the long term but if you want to stay in the Champions League you need to win these games."

Chelsea's poor run of form continued on Saturday as they were thrashed 4-1 by Newcastle United at St. James' Park. The match was a highly competitive one as both teams played well, but it was Chelsea who went away as losers.

Newcastle took the lead in the 13th minute of first half when Alexander Isak fired home a shot over Sanchez from a Lewis Miley's perfectly-timed throughball. Chelsea equalized through a wonderful free-kick from Sterling who lifted his shot up and over the wall, and a static Pope could only watch as the ball nestled into the near top corner to make it 1-1. The Magpies got the lead again in the second half when Jamal Lascelles thumps a header into the back of the net in the 60th minute. In less than a minute Newcastle doubled their advantage when Joelinton pounced on a mistake from Chelsea defender Thiago Silva to score to make it 3-1.

Chelsea's misery was compounded when Reece James was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 73rd minute. The dismissal summed up a frustrating afternoon for the Blues who were hoping to continue their winning streak haven won their last three matches in the Premier League, and they've lost just one of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Chelsea were indebted to goalkeeper Sanchez, who made a number of good saves to keep the score down. However, even he could not prevent Newcastle from claiming a deserved victory.

There were a number of reasons why Chelsea performed lost against Newcastle. Firstly, they were far too open at the back and allowed Newcastle to create a number of chances. Secondly, their attack was toothless and they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.

Finally, they were let down by some individual errors, such as Thiago Silva's mistake for Newcastle's third goal.

What does this mean for Chelsea?

Chelsea's defeat to Newcastle leaves them in tenth place in the Premier League table, 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal. They will need to improve significantly if they are to challenge for a place in Europe.

What next for Chelsea?

Chelsea will be hoping to bounce back from their defeat to Newcastle when they welcome Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday before they visit Old Trafford three days later for a match with Manchester United.

Chelsea's match against Brighton will be without Reece James who plays a key role for the Blues.
